If you’re trying to reduce how much you contribute to your local landfill, you should probably consider picking up a travel mug or tumbler. And what better brand is there than Swig Life, the makers of uniquely stylish drinkware? The only question is, can you wash a Swig cup in the dishwasher?
All of Swig Life’s drinkware are top-rack dishwasher safe. Simply place the Swig cups upside down on the top rack and run a wash cycle as you normally would. Even the accessories, such as lids, are safe to wash in your dishwasher.
But if you need to get rid of stubborn stains from your Swig cup, elbow grease might be the only solution. In this guide, I’ll explain how to wash a Swig cup in your dishwasher and how to deep-clean it by hand.
Types of Swig Drinkware
If you navigate to Swig Life’s website and check out the drinkware section, you’ll find that the company makes all sorts of cups and glasses. Here’s a brief description of what each of those drinkware types is.
Perfect Pairs—This is a set of one wine cup and one tumbler that come in the same exact design. You can save a bit of money by getting a Perfect Pair instead of them separately.
Mugs—Are you a lover of hot drinks, milk-based, chocolate-based, coffee-based, or otherwise? If so, then you’ll want to pick up a Swig mug that has stylish prints on its exterior and long handles to keep your digits away from the scorching-hot cup.
Tumblers—Since we’re trying to reduce how much pollution we contribute to our local landfills, it doesn’t hurt to have a tumbler on hand. You can fill it up with a homemade brew or as your favorite barista to fill it up with your go-to on-the-go drink.
Wine Glasses—Swig Life has completely changed the meaning of “wine flute” by introducing their selection of wide, stemless wine drinkware. Although you should limit your wine intake to just 5 fluid ounces per day (or none at all, in my opinion!), I won’t judge you for filling up a 14-ounce Swig glass with your favorite wine. Or you can use it for drinking cocoa—your choice!
Insulated Bottles—Are you looking for a way to stay hydrated while traveling from place to place? Why not fill a 20-ounce Swig bottle with your favorite chilled drink and enjoy the refreshing coolness even hours later?
Are Swig Cups Dishwasher Safe?
Here’s the great thing about Swig Life—it’s not just the cups that are dishwasher safe, but all of their drinkware items, from mugs to wine glasses, are safe to place inside your dishwasher!
However, like with any piece of drinkware, you should make sure that you place your Swig cup in the top dishrack where all of your glasses belong.
That way, the interior will be thoroughly cleaned out without being filled with water used to rinse the rest of your dishes.
How to Wash a Swig Cup in a Dishwasher
The thing that Swig Life customers worry about when washing their cups in a dishwasher is the silicone base. Well, I have good news for you—Swig Life claims that the silicone base is also dishwasher safe!
Per Swig Life’s instructions, here is how you properly wash your Swig cup in a dishwasher:
- Pre-rinse your cup to remove most of the debris from your previous beverage. This is especially important if you filled your cup with coffee grounds or tea leaves.
- Remove the slider piece from the cup’s lid if it has one. To do this, remove the lid from the cup and place it upside down on a flat surface. Using a spoon, carefully push the lid down until it pops out. Place the slider piece in your dishwasher’s utensil basket.
- Place the Swig cup upside down on the top dishrack of your dishwasher. Make sure not to overcrowd the dishrack since Swig cups can be pretty large.
- Run any wash cycle of your choosing. Because Swig cups are designed to hold hot beverages, they’re safe to wash in even the hottest dishwasher around.
How to Handwash a Swig Cup
If you don’t have a dishwasher, don’t worry—you can wash your Swig cup using nothing but a sponge, some soap, and a bit of elbow grease. Here’s how it’s done:
- Add mild liquid dish soap to a soft sponge.
- Lather the interior and exterior of the Swig cup before rinsing it with cool water.
- Remove the slider piece from the lid per the instructions above.
- Wash the slider piece with a soapy sponge before rinsing it with cool water.
Please note that while Swig cups are durable, their printed designs might begin to peel off if you use abrasive cleaners, especially those that contain chlorine.
How to Remove Stains from Swig Cups
If you forget to wash out the day-old coffee from your Swig cup, the inside of the cup might become slightly stained. And as any hardcore coffee drinker knows, those stains are almost impossible to get rid of.
I say “almost impossible” because you can use this neat trick to get rid of stubborn stains on the inside of your Swig cup.
- Dilute 1 part vinegar with four parts warm water and pour it into your Swig cup.
- Let the vinegar solution sit for 15 minutes.
- Use a sponge to gently scrub the interior of your cup with the vinegar solution.
- Rinse the vinegar solution out of the cup.
If all you have on hand is baking soda, you can use it to wash your deep-clean your Swig cup by doing the following.
- Mix 3 parts baking soda with 1 part warm water and pour it into your Swig cup.
- Let the baking soda solution sit for 20-30 minutes.
- Use a sponge to gently scrub the interior of your cup with the baking soda solution.
- Rinse the baking solution out of the cup.
Now, if you have trouble getting your sponge to fit in the corners of your Swig tumbler or bottle, here’s what you need to do.
- Boil enough water to pour into the Swig tumbler or bottle.
- Pour the boiling water into the Swig tumbler or bottle and let it sit overnight.
- The following morning, wash the tumbler or bottle by hand by following the “How to Wash Handwash a Swig Cup” instructions.
